Haiti's Struggle: Gangs, Officials, and the Fight for Control

Haiti, Port-au-PrinceSun Aug 10 2025

In Haiti, the fight against gangs is getting tougher. Police recently arrested a former senator, Nenel Cassy, for allegedly working with these gangs. This is a big deal because high-level arrests don't happen often in Haiti.

Cassy is accused of funding and supporting gang members who attacked a peaceful neighborhood called Kenscoff. This area, home to many wealthy Haitians, had been safe until February when gangs started violent attacks.

Gang Violence Escalates

The situation is getting worse. Just recently, gangs kidnapped nine workers from an orphanage in Kenscoff. The orphanage, run by an international charity, houses over 240 children. The charity had to close two hospitals because of this attack. This shows how gangs are trying to take over more areas and control the people living there.

Gangs Take Over Port-au-Prince

Gangs now control most of Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital. They are attacking places that were once peaceful. Last year, over 5,600 people were killed, and more than a million were left homeless due to gang violence. The United Nations says gangs are using kidnappings to control areas under their power.

Government Struggles to Regain Control

The Haitian government is struggling to keep control. With gangs taking over more territory, it's hard for the government to protect its people. The arrest of Cassy is a step, but it's not enough. The fight against gangs in Haiti is far from over.
