Hand-Counting Rule in Georgia Gets Blocked
Georgia, USAWed Oct 16 2024
A Georgia judge has stopped a new rule that would've required counties to hand-count Election Day ballots. This rule was set to start on October 22, just two weeks before the election. The judge said it would cause confusion and chaos because there's not enough time to train poll workers. This rule was pushed by three board members who were praised by former President Trump. It was opposed by Democrats, as well as the Republican Secretary of State and Attorney General. Some people on the right want to hand-count ballots because they think voting machines can be hacked, even though there's no evidence for this. This isn't the first time Georgia has been in the spotlight for election rules. In August, the same board members passed a rule that might cause more problems. That rule lets county election board members ask questions before they certify results, but it doesn't define what questions are allowed. Some people worry this could cause more chaos. The judge's decision is likely to be appealed.
