The Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center, a local landmark that has hosted music, comedy and community events for 15 years, is set to close permanently after a dispute over unpaid amusement taxes. The venue’s owner announced the shutdown on Facebook, blaming the city for refusing to renew essential health and mercantile licenses. The post also highlighted a 10% amusement tax that, according to city officials, has been withheld by the center’s management despite being collected from patrons.
City solicitor Neil Grover said the tax issue is not new and that HMAC has kept millions of dollars owed to the city. He added that businesses may face interest charges if they fail to remit these funds. In a council meeting, residents—including a long‑time bartender and an owner’s daughter—appealed to the city council for help. They argued that HMAC is more than a business; it is a cultural hub that draws visitors and supports nearby restaurants, hotels and small shops.
One speaker pointed out Harrisburg’s amusement tax rate of 10% is higher than those in Philadelphia (5%) and New York City (8. 8%). He urged council members to intervene, calling the venue “a jewel” that deserves protection. Another community voice described HMAC as a place where people can express themselves freely and where the city’s creative energy thrives.
The center has repeatedly tried to negotiate a payment plan with city officials, but those efforts were reportedly ignored. City officials said HMAC owes more than just the tax; it has a substantial debt that includes other obligations. The mayor’s office and city solicitor are said to be exploring all legal options.
For many locals, the loss of HMAC feels like a blow to downtown revitalization. The venue has hosted concerts, comedy shows, poetry readings, trivia nights and political fundraisers, turning Harrisburg into a destination for cultural travelers. If the city cannot reach an agreement with HMAC, residents fear losing a space that has been central to community life and economic activity for over a decade.
