Healdsburg Council Shake-Up: New Faces Set to Win Nov 3

Healdsburg is gearing up for its first ever district-based city council election on November 3. For the first time, voters won't choose council members from across the entire city. Instead, they'll pick representatives from specific areas called districts. This shift means people living near each other will vote together for their own neighborhood's voice.

Two new faces are heading into the fray in District 2. Mathew Lopez, a 27-year-old high school math teacher and coach, entered the race because he feels stuck trying to build a stable life in his hometown. He sees himself as a young professional who gets squeezed by daily struggles. Scott Pratt, 63, brings decades of experience as an advertising producer. His dad was a WWII pilot who spent two years as a prisoner of war. Pratt plans to lean on his business skills to tackle tough city problems like housing costs.

Alex Wood, the son of former councilmember Jim Wood, pulled out of the race early but stayed on the ballot. He won't take office even if he wins. Meanwhile, District 4 was supposed to be a battle between two council colleagues, but one candidate dropped out. That left Chris Herrod, the current mayor, running alone without opposition. The upcoming council members will face real challenges once elected. They'll need to balance affordable housing with growth. Water security is another big worry since the Russian River might get drier due to climate change and lower Eel River flows. The group also has to figure out how to diversify the local economy when wine and farming face pressure.
