Health Plans for TV Writers Get a Tough New Twist

The world of writing for film and television is uneven. Some years bring big paychecks, while others leave writers with little to no income. To bridge those gaps, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) created a points system in 2000 that lets writers keep health coverage even when they’re not working. The idea was simple: a writer could build up points by earning money and then use those points to stay covered during slow periods.
But the system is under threat. On April 4, the WGA reached an agreement that will slow how points are earned and raise the cost of using them for health insurance. Critics say this move is like putting money into a savings account that you can’t later withdraw from. The new deal also devalues points earned in the past, which many writers compare to a Social Security payment that can’t be claimed.
The agreement still needs a vote from the guild’s members, which will run until April 24. While some writers are venting on private Facebook groups, the WGA is holding Zoom meetings to explain the changes. The guild’s president said that change is always hard, but members need time to understand and adapt.
In a typical year about 400 writers use points for health coverage. During the rise of streaming, many writers piled up points and then had to use them when the market cooled. Now about 1, 200 writers rely on points for insurance. The cost of the program has ballooned from a few million dollars to almost $40 million, while the health fund is already running a $50 million deficit. The guild says it can’t afford to keep the current system.
Under the new rules, a writer who has worked steadily for ten years could have one to three years of extended coverage. Those earning more than $200, 000 will only get about half that; lower‑earning writers lose coverage entirely. Writers who already banked points can still use them, but the duration of their insurance will shrink. For example, a writer who could keep coverage for 24 months now only gets 15 unless they switch to a narrower network plan.
The WGA fought against even deeper cuts proposed by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. While the guild accepted a four‑year contract instead of the usual three, it secured more funding for health insurance—$321 million—to keep the plan solvent. The longer contract gives studios a buffer against future shutdowns, but writers do not want to stay at four years permanently. They plan to keep the leverage of a strike in future negotiations.
The agreement also delays discussions about artificial intelligence (AI) that were a major issue during the 2023 strike. The WGA wants writers to be paid when their scripts are used to train AI models, but no licensing market exists yet. The studios and the guild will keep talking over the next four years to figure out how writers might be compensated if that market develops. The writers say they hope the dialogue will remain constructive and transparent, even though AI meetings were initially seen as a weak substitute for real protections.
