A health worker from Nebraska was sentenced to two years in prison for illegally accessing the medical records of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg before her death. Trent Russell, 34, worked as a transplant coordinator and had access to hospital records across the region. He was found guilty of illegally accessing health care records and altering them.
Russell was also accused of posting Ginsburg's information online in 2019, during a time when her health was a topic of public debate. Although he was acquitted of that charge, prosecutors argued that he shared the records on forums known for antisemitic conspiracy theories. They also pointed out that Ginsburg's high profile made her a vulnerable target.
Russell's lawyer tried to justify his actions by mentioning his work as a transplant coordinator and his military service. However, the judge was not convinced, calling Russell's crime "truly despicable. " The judge also noted that Russell lied to investigators and blamed his cat for the incident.
The case raised questions about the severity of the crime, with some arguing that Ginsburg's high office made her less vulnerable. The judge considered Russell's personal circumstances, including a sick step-parent, before issuing the sentence. Russell and his lawyer declined to comment on whether they plan to appeal.
