In Catalonia, where nearly one in five people are migrants, healthcare workers are facing a big challenge. They need to understand and connect with people from different backgrounds. A recent study looked at how well these workers feel they can do this.
The study involved over 750 healthcare professionals from various centers in the northern part of Barcelona. They were asked about their knowledge, skills, and comfort in dealing with diverse cultures. Most of the respondents were women, Spanish, and had permanent jobs.
Interestingly, younger workers and those who had recently joined the field scored higher in attitudes and training. This suggests that newer generations might be more open to cultural differences. However, the study found no big differences between centers with high or low migration rates.
The results show that there is still room for improvement. Healthcare workers need better training to understand the social factors that affect health. This is crucial for providing good care to everyone, regardless of their background.
The study also highlights the need for policies that adapt to the changing social landscape. As migration continues to shape Catalonia's population, cultural competence in healthcare becomes even more important.
