Emergency Room Closures Due to Lack of Staff

The Prince Rupert Regional Hospital's emergency room has been severely impacted by staff shortages, leading to closures on July 7 and 9 due to a lack of doctors and nurses. This issue is not isolated—over 90% of emergency room closures in Prince Rupert and Kitimat General Hospital between January and June were caused by staffing problems.

Persistent Challenges Despite Recruitment Efforts

Despite efforts to recruit more staff, the emergency department continues to struggle. Northern Health launched a task force last year to find solutions, including incentives for new hires and temporary workers to fill shifts.

Progress, But Not Enough

The task force has seen a 6.2% decrease in service interruptions in the region between January and June compared to the same period last year. However, closures still occur, leaving patients without access to critical care.

Recruitment and Systemic Issues

Northern Health is collaborating with BC Health Careers and local communities to attract healthcare workers. However, the root cause of staff shortages remains systemiclow pay, long hours, lack of support, and underfunding in the healthcare system.

Patients Left Suffering

Patients in Prince Rupert and Kitimat face long waits for care, sometimes hours or even days. This situation is unacceptable, and the government must take action to address the staffing crisis in healthcare.
