Healthy habits after a kidney transplant: why patients struggle to stick with them
Sun Apr 05 2026
When someone gets a new kidney, their body changes in big ways. Doctors say that eating right and staying active could prevent serious problems like heart disease or losing the new organ. Yet many patients don’t follow the advice they’re given.
A small study tracked 34 kidney transplant patients. First, researchers asked if they knew healthy habits mattered. Later, they checked how well patients actually stuck to diet and exercise plans. Most said they understood the benefits and felt better when they followed the rules. Still, real-world habits don’t always match good intentions.
The gap between knowing and doing is the real challenge. Even when patients believe in the advice, daily life gets in the way—busy schedules, cravings, or just forgetting. Doctors argue that these lifestyle rules should be treated like medicine. But without better support, many patients fall back into old routines.
