Researchers looked into how different sources of nutrients like copper, manganese, and zinc affect beef heifers. They used either sulfate or hydroxychloride forms during periods of restricted feeding and high-starch diets. The study involved Nelore heifers with similar ages and weights, divided into groups with free access to salt and Tifton hay.
From day 28, they received protein supplements with either sulfate (SUL) or hydroxychloride (HYD) minerals until the end of the study. The diet was restricted from day 56 to day 83, and from day 84 to 112, they were slowly introduced to a high-starch diet.
Overall, heifers fed hydroxychloride minerals had better growth and certain health indicators. For example, their daily weight gain was better during the surplus period, and they showed improved hormone levels related to growth. However, neither mineral form significantly impacted long-term growth or stress hormones during diet changes.
