Helping Moms Get the Care They Need

Moms in America face big challenges. Many struggle with addiction or mental health issues, especially during and after pregnancy. Yet, our country is not doing enough to support them. America has the highest rate of moms dying from pregnancy-related issues among wealthy nations. Shockingly, over 20% of these deaths are linked to substance abuse and mental health problems. This is a crisis that needs urgent attention. Some lawmakers are stepping up. They are pushing for a new law called the Mental Health and Making Access More Affordable (MAMA) Act. This law aims to make mental health care and addiction treatment more accessible for moms. It would remove copays for these services during pregnancy and the first year after giving birth. The postpartum period, often called the "fourth trimester, " is just as crucial as the three trimesters. Many moms face silent battles with conditions like postpartum depression. In fact, about one in seven women experiences depression during or after pregnancy. Celebrities like Serena Williams and Reese Witherspoon have openly talked about their struggles, helping to reduce the stigma.The MAMA Act also addresses substance use disorders. These conditions need treatment, not punishment. The opioid crisis has hit pregnant women hard, with rates of opioid use disorder quadrupling between 1999 and 2014. This law could help treat these disorders with the dignity and compassion they deserve. Fear of discrimination, especially among women of color, often stops moms from seeking help. The consequences of untreated mental health and substance use disorders are severe. Drug overdose rates for pregnant and postpartum women skyrocketed by 81% between 2017 and 2020. Increasing access to treatment could save lives. On Maternal Health Awareness Day, the MAMA Act renews the commitment to improving maternal health. It's a step towards a society where every mom gets the care she needs. Congress has a crucial role to play in making this vision a reality.
