Helping Syrian Refugees Through Therapy: What Works?
Middle EastTue Dec 24 2024
Syrian refugees, displaced by ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts, often face severe mental health issues like post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and grief. A group of researchers reviewed 22 studies from different databases to understand what psychotherapeutic interventions work best. These studies showed a high need for mental health support due to the refugees' traumatic experiences. Several approaches were used, including Problem Management Plus (PM+), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and dance or art therapy. Younger refugees might get help through group activities like EMDR, art, or dance therapy. Adults, especially those in camps, often received PM+. Group sessions and face-to-face interaction were common. The findings underscore the importance of tailoring treatments to refugee culture and background. By considering these factors and adopting sensitive approaches, mental health professionals can better help Syrian refugees recover and integrate into their new homes. Remember, every refugee is unique, and what works for one might not work for another.
