Hezbollah's Deadly Ambitions
Middle East, BeirutSun Sep 22 2024
In the midst of escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, a devastating airstrike by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) took the lives of 16 senior commanders and operatives of the Iran-backed terror group. The strike, which occurred in a high-rise apartment building in southern Beirut, was allegedly targeting a meeting where Hezbollah leaders were planning a massive ground invasion of northern Israel, reminiscent of the devastating Hamas attacks on October 7.
According to IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the killed leaders, including Ibrahim Aqil and Ahmed Wahbi, were part of Hezbollah's top brass that oversaw near-daily attacks on Israel since October 8. Aqil, in particular, was said to be the mastermind behind the planned invasion, which aimed to conquer the Galilee region.
Hezbollah's response to the airstrike was swift and violent, with over 100 rockets fired into Israel, wounding at least three people and sending thousands scrambling for shelters. Israel retaliated with its own rocket barrage, killing at least three people and wounding four near the border.
The conflict has reached a boiling point, with the US backing Israel's right to defend itself while urging restraint. White House National Security spokesman John Kirby emphasized that a diplomatic solution is still possible, despite the heightened tensions.
