Campeche, MexicoWed Oct 30 2024
For years, experts have been digging up secrets about the ancient Maya empire, which stretched from Mexico down to Central America. But even with all that exploring, there’s still so much we don’t know. A new study just unveiled a fascinating discovery: an entire Maya city hidden in Mexico’s Campeche region. This city, named Valeriana, was found using a tech tool called lidar that basically reads the landscape like a massive scanner. The lidar scan showed over 6, 500 ancient structures, including pyramids and ball courts! What’s even more exciting is that Valeriana was right under our noses, near a highway and a town where locals have been farming amidst the ruins for a long time. This find shows that the Maya civilization might be hiding many more secrets.
“This discovery is like finding a hidden treasure, ” said Luke Auld-Thomas, a researcher from Tulane University. “It’s not just about the city itself, but about the countless other structures and settlements that could still be out there, waiting to be discovered. ”
