New York Governor Kathy Hochul is facing strong opposition from her own party over planned cuts to the state's Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP). The program allows elderly, sick and disabled residents to receive care in their own homes.
According to a recent poll, 76% of New Yorkers and 70% of likely Democratic voters oppose Hochul's changes, which would shift operations to an out-of-state company. The proposed overhaul has critics worried that it could force thousands into nursing homes. Over 30 lawmakers have signed a letter seeking a delay in the plan.
Hochul argues the reforms are needed to ensure taxpayer dollars effectively serve those who need them, and that the program is being manipulated by middlemen.
