The holiday season is a time for joy, but it's also a time when scammers are extra active. With so much going on, it's easy to let our guard down. Nearly 9 out of 10 adults have either been targeted or tricked by a scam during the holidays. One common trick is fake stores on social media. These stores pop up for a short time, selling fake branded items. They use stolen logos or similar names to look real. Once you place an order, the store might vanish. To stay safe, always check reviews and use a credit card for better protection. Another scam involves gift cards. Scammers can steal the numbers and PINs from gift cards before you buy them. They add the cards back to the rack, and when you add money, they drain it instantly. To avoid this, buy gift cards from the front of the store or opt for electronic gift cards.
Fake delivery texts are also common. Scammers send messages pretending to be from shipping companies, saying there's a problem with your package. They ask for personal information. Always verify with the company directly if you get such a message. Lastly, beware of travel deals that seem too good to be true. Many people fall for fake travel websites and end up losing money. Stick to known vendors and always do your research before booking. If you do fall for a scam, report it quickly. You can report it to local law enforcement, the Federal Trade Commission, or the AARP Fraud Watch Network. Remember, staying informed and cautious can help you enjoy the holidays without any scam-related stress.
