People are leaving California in droves, and it isn’t just everyday folks. Between 2021 and 2022, about 817, 000 residents decided to move out of the state, driven by high living costs and rising wildfire danger. Even celebrities with deep pockets are following suit.
The trend shows a shift toward states like Arizona, Florida and Texas, or even overseas. The reasons are similar: steep taxes, pricey homes and a political climate that feels restrictive for some. In Los Angeles, the cost of living has reached a point where even affluent residents feel squeezed.
One notable example is Gus Lira, who owned a Malibu condo but chose Nevada after realizing California’s taxes were eating too much of his income. “You can’t get ahead when you get $100 and they take $60, ” he explained in an interview.
Other stars have moved for personal or professional reasons. Kelly Clarkson left Los Angeles for New York City after her divorce in 2022, seeking a fresh start. In 2024, Sylvester Stallone announced he and his family were “permanently” relocating to South Florida, citing Hollywood’s hectic pace as a factor. Some celebrities keep their motives private, simply stating they want a new beginning.
These moves reflect a broader pattern of wealthier individuals seeking places where their money has more buying power and the lifestyle feels less stressful. The exodus is reshaping the cultural landscape of California’s entertainment hub.
