Holyoke says goodbye to rat poison on public land
Holyoke, USAFri May 08 2026
Starting next month, Holyoke will stop using poison to control rats on city property. The City Council voted unanimously to ban a group of strong rodenticides called second-generation anticoagulants. The move follows concerns about how these chemicals affect more than just rats—they can harm pets, birds, and other wildlife too.
Why did it take so long to make this change? Early talks focused on checking with health experts first. Later, officials realized they also needed input from the people who handle daily rat control—the public works team. After chatting with the pest control company, they learned switching methods would be simple. Instead of poison, the city will use metal boxes called TinCats. These traps catch rodents without spreading dangerous chemicals.
The pest control company already uses these traps in local schools. They say the new system is just as effective but much safer. The transition starts July 1, with the pest control vendor ready to make the swap. City leaders see this as an important step for public health. It also protects animals that might accidentally eat poisoned bait.
Officials had to spend extra time fine-tuning the legal wording before voting. They borrowed an existing template and adjusted it for Holyoke’s needs. The council member pushing for the ban hopes this change will inspire nearby towns to do the same. She calls it a health win for both people and wildlife.
