Hong Kong’s Dragon Boat Festival: More Than Just Races
Hong KongWed May 06 2026
Every summer, Hong Kong turns into a giant celebration of speed, tradition, and community. The 2026 Dragon Boat Festival is no exception. Instead of just watching teams paddle furiously, visitors get a full 13-day festival that mixes old customs with modern fun.
The main races happen on June 27 and 28 at Victoria Harbour in Tsim Sha Tsui. Over 220 teams from 16 countries will compete, making it one of Asia’s biggest dragon boat events. But the festival starts earlier—June 19—and spreads across the city, blending sports, food, and culture.
Dragon boat racing didn’t begin as a competition. It started with fishing villages using decorated boats to chase away bad luck and honor their gods. In 1976, Hong Kong hosted its first international race, turning a local ritual into a global sport. Now, it’s part of the Asian Games, proving how far it’s come. Still, the festival keeps its roots alive with workshops on traditional crafts and even a parade in Tai O, where colorful boats carry statues through the waterways.
Beyond the races, the festival turns the waterfront into a nonstop party. Food stalls serve up street classics like rice dumplings, while a beer garden keeps the mood lively. People can try virtual dragon boat games or watch live music under Hong Kong’s skyline. It’s not just a sporting event—it’s a full sensory experience where old meets new.
Even outside the main venue, Hong Kong celebrates in its own way. Neighborhoods like Stanley and Sai Kung host their own races, each with a unique vibe. Whether you love sports, food, or culture, the festival offers something for everyone.
