Honor's Magic V5: A Bold Move in the Foldable Phone Game
ChinaWed Jul 02 2025
Honor has just unveiled its latest foldable phone, the Magic V5, aiming to shake up the market and give Samsung a run for its money. This new device is all about being thin and packing a big battery, which is exactly what many tech fans are looking for. The Magic V5 is set to hit stores in China first, but Honor plans to bring it to other countries later this year.
The Magic V5 is impressively slim, measuring just 8. 8 mm to 9mm when folded, depending on the color. That's a noticeable improvement over its predecessor, the Magic V3, which was 9. 2 mm thick. The new model also weighs less, coming in at 217 grams to 222 grams, depending on the version. Honor is also offering a special edition in China with a whopping 1 terabyte of storage and a battery that holds over 6000 milliampere-hours, which is one of the largest capacities out there for foldable phones.
Foldable phones are still a small part of the overall smartphone market, making up less than 2% in 2024. Samsung is the biggest player in this niche, followed by Huawei and then Honor. Honor is hoping to gain more ground with the Magic V5, especially as Samsung is set to launch its own new foldable next week.
Experts are taking notice of Honor's latest offering. Francisco Jeronimo, a vice president at the International Data Corporation, called the Magic V5 a strong contender. He highlighted the phone's battery and other features, saying it could give Samsung a tough challenge. However, Honor still has some catching up to do when it comes to brand recognition and global reach.
Neil Shah, co-founder of Counterpoint Research, pointed out that Samsung has a bigger presence worldwide and a long history of making foldable phones. Samsung's vertical integration, where the company makes its own displays and batteries, gives it an edge. If Samsung can match or beat the Magic V5's thin design in its next release, Honor might find it harder to stand out.
Honor is also pushing the Magic V5's artificial intelligence features, which could be a big selling point for tech-savvy users. As the competition heats up, it will be interesting to see how Honor's bold move with the Magic V5 plays out in the foldable phone market.
