Yemen's civil war has been going on for a long time. It started in 2014 when the Houthis took over the capital. Things got worse in 2015 when a Saudi-led coalition got involved. Since then, the fighting has caused a lot of suffering.
Recently, there's a bit of good news. The Houthis and the Saudi-backed Yemeni government have agreed to swap prisoners. This is the biggest deal like this so far. Around 1, 700 Houthi detainees will be freed. In return, about 1, 200 prisoners held by the other side will go free. This includes seven Saudis and 23 Sudanese.
This deal was made possible with help from the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross. They oversaw the agreement, which was signed after 12 days of talks in Oman. The UN special envoy, Hans Grundberg, said this is a positive step. It might ease the suffering of detainees and their families.
Prisoner swaps have been one of the few bright spots in this long conflict. In 2020, over 1, 000 prisoners were released. Then, in 2023, another big swap happened with 973 detainees freed. These deals show that even in war, there can be moments of hope.
The war in Yemen has been brutal. According to a 2021 UN report, around 377, 000 people have died. Many of these deaths are from indirect causes like lack of food, water, and healthcare. The conflict has caused a lot of pain and suffering.
Despite the ceasefire expiring in 2022, the parties have avoided full-scale war. Humanitarian measures like prisoner exchanges keep the dialogue going. It's a small step, but it's a step in the right direction.
