Hospital shake-up leaves workers uneasy despite promises

Bayonne; Jersey City; Hoboken, USAMon Apr 06 2026
Close to a thousand staff at Bayonne University Hospital in New Jersey received unexpected layoff notices recently, but the hospital’s new owner insists they shouldn’t panic. The notices, filed under state rules, suggest big changes are coming by late June. This follows the sudden closure of Heights University Hospital’s emergency room just weeks ago, another facility under the same ownership group. The health system’s spokesperson explained that the layoff notice is mostly a legal step. Hudson Regional Health, the new owner, is still finalizing paperwork to take full control. Most employees will likely keep their jobs under the new management, but the uncertainty is unsettling. The company has poured millions into upgrading Bayonne’s hospital, aiming to make it a top healthcare provider in the area.
Things weren’t always this complicated. These three hospitals—Bayonne, Heights, and Hoboken—were once run by CarePoint Health, a nonprofit that collapsed under a mountain of debt. In 2024, CarePoint filed for bankruptcy with $300 million owed, putting several hospitals at risk of shutting down for good. A court later approved a rescue plan, handing control to Hudson Regional in early 2025. But the new owner quickly ran into trouble. Heights University Hospital, which had already received state funding to stay afloat, couldn’t escape financial struggles. Despite pumping $300 million into operations, the hospital’s future looked bleak. Medicaid cuts, fewer charity care patients, and unpaid bills piled up. By November 2025, the hospital closed completely, leaving the community scrambling. Even after that, Hudson Regional tried keeping a small emergency room open. But in February, that too shut down. Residents protested in March, leading to arrests when people refused to leave the premises. Now, the state is holding a public meeting on April 15 to discuss the hospital’s permanent closure. The outcome could shape how healthcare works in Hudson County for years.
