House Backs Bill to Kick Out Violent Immigrants
USASun Jan 19 2025
On Thursday, the House approved a bill aiming to deport illegal immigrants with a history of violence against women. This bill, called the Preventing Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, was introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC). It received support from both sides of the political aisle, with all Republicans and 61 Democrats voting in favor. This isn't the first time Democrats have backed this bill; 51 did so in the previous Congress.
The vote comes as Republicans are focusing on illegal immigration and the rise in border crossings. The bill is one of twelve prioritized for a quick vote under the new House rules. While more Democrats voted for it this time, many still accuse Republicans of using women's tragedies to push immigration bills that don't address the root problem.
This vote serves as a test for Democrats, who are reflecting on their losses in the recent election. Younger Democrats urge their party to be more assertive, while center-left lawmakers caution against extreme views, suggesting a return to the middle on contentious issues. Last week, the House passed another bipartisan bill, the Laken Riley Act, indicating a shift in stance on border issues. Some Senate Democrats also support Mace's bill, increasing the likelihood of similar backing in the Senate.
