How ChatGPT-4 Simplifies Medical Texts: Keeping It Simple and Accurate

As medical writing becomes more complex, patients struggle to understand crucial information. This study looked into using ChatGPT-4 to simplify neurology and neurosurgery abstracts and patient education materials. The goal was to see if ChatGPT-4 could make these texts easier to read while keeping the core meaning intact. Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) was used to check if the content stayed the same after simplification. The research found that ChatGPT-4 could indeed make the texts more readable. But, it also raised concerns about whether the simplification process sometimes changed key details. This is important because patients need accurate information to make informed decisions about their health. The study suggests that while AI can be a helpful tool, humans should still check the simplified texts to ensure nothing important is lost.
