How Did Big Crises Affect Our Happiness?

Big events like the Great Recession of 2008/9 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021 didn't just affect economies – they also impacted how people felt about their lives. Researchers looked at data from six different surveys across Europe and found that people reported feeling less happy during these tough times. But it wasn't the same everywhere. In some places, people's well-being stayed pretty steady. Even in countries near Ukraine after the Russian invasion in 2022, people felt a dip in their happiness.
Business and consumer surveys showed that people's hopes for the future, their finances, and the economy took a hit during these crises. But interestingly, these feelings bounced back quickly. Companies also felt more optimistic about the economy and job market soon after.
Looking at the bigger picture, the Human Development Index (HDI) from the United Nations didn't change much. Neither did data from the World Happiness Report from the Gallup World Poll. While HDI has been rising over the last decade, reflecting improvements in people's lives, it did drop a little after 2020 as life expectancy went down. Life satisfaction has been going up, but so have negative feelings in Europe and despair in the United States.
