How Does High-Intensity Workout Impact Blood Pressure in Elderly Women with Diabetes and High Blood Pressure?
Fri Jan 10 2025
You're an older woman managing both type 2 diabetes (T2D) and high blood pressure (HTN). You might wonder if intense workouts could affect your blood pressure? A study looked at this, focusing on untrained women over 65. They explored two high-intensity interval training (HIIT) routines: one with short, intense bursts (HIIT10) and another with longer, high-intensity sessions (HIIT4). Both were done at 90% of their maximum heart rate. They also had a resting period as a comparison. Blood pressure was checked right after and for the next 24 hours. Here's what they found: no significant changes in blood pressure immediately after or during the day. But at night, the pulse pressure dropped a bit in both HIIT groups compared to the resting period. It seems these intense workouts didn't make a big difference in blood pressure, especially since these women had well-controlled blood pressure and weren't very fit.
