You might think that hot weather only makes you sweat, but it can also change your blood pressure. According to a study in Bangladesh, when the temperature goes up, our blood pressure can go down. This isn't just because our skin blood vessels open up to cool us off. The heat also affects how much pee we make and what's in it, like sodium and potassium. These urine electrolytes play a role too, but the direct effect of heat on blood pressure is stronger.
Scientists combined data from 5, 624 people over six months. They found that every 5°C rise in temperature lowered systolic blood pressure by 1. 42 mmHg directly, and also changed urine electrolyte levels in a way that slightly impacted blood pressure. It's like a double whammy, but the direct effect is more powerful. More research is needed to understand exactly how heat and blood pressure are connected.
