How Faith Fights Can Affect Mental Health

Fri May 16 2025
Spiritual or religious struggles can seriously affect mental health. These struggles can include feeling distant from God, guilt over not meeting moral standards, or feeling judged by family or community. This can make it harder to recover from mental health issues. However, researchers have not yet looked into how these struggles affect people in therapies that focus on spirituality. A recent study involved 175 therapists and 1, 404 clients from 38 clinics. The therapists tracked the clients' spiritual struggles and psychological distress over the first six weeks of treatment. They did this in three intervals: Weeks 1-2, Weeks 3-4, and Weeks 5-6. The results showed that spiritual struggles often led to more psychological distress in the following weeks. This was true even when the distress did not predict later spiritual struggles. In other words, people who struggled with their faith early on were more likely to be distressed later. The study also found that the severity of spiritual struggles at the second interval mediated the link between early struggles and later distress. These findings suggest that spiritual struggles can drive many clients' depression, anxiety, and other symptoms during therapy. It is important for therapists to understand the negative aspects of spirituality. This knowledge can help them address their clients' spiritual struggles during treatment when it is needed. However, it is also important to note that this study only looked at clients who were already in therapy. It did not include people who might have avoided therapy due to spiritual struggles. This could mean that the findings do not represent the full picture of how spiritual struggles affect mental health. It is also important to consider the role of culture and community in shaping spiritual struggles. For example, people from different cultural backgrounds may have different experiences of spiritual struggle. This could affect how they respond to therapy and how therapists should address their struggles. It is important to consider these factors when interpreting the findings of this study. The study also raises questions about the role of spirituality in mental health more broadly. While spiritual struggles can be a source of distress, spirituality can also be a source of strength and resilience. For some people, their faith may help them cope with mental health challenges. However, for others, spiritual struggles may make it harder to recover. It is important for therapists to be aware of both the positive and negative aspects of spirituality. This can help them provide more effective and culturally sensitive care to their clients. It is also important for researchers to continue exploring the complex relationship between spirituality and mental health. This can help us better understand how to support people who are struggling with both. In conclusion, spiritual struggles can have a significant impact on mental health. Therapists should be prepared to address these struggles during treatment. However, it is also important to consider the broader cultural and community factors that shape spiritual struggles. This can help therapists provide more effective and culturally sensitive care to their clients. It is also important for researchers to continue exploring the complex relationship between spirituality and mental health. This can help us better understand how to support people who are struggling with both.
