How Foot Arch Stiffness Shapes Our Steps
Sat Dec 14 2024
Ever wondered how your foot's arch affects the way you walk? Scientists explored this by looking at what happens when the plantar fascia, a tough tissue in the foot, gets stiffer or softer. They created a virtual foot model based on real foot data and observed changes in stress, angles, and arch height during walking. The goal? To understand how foot stiffness might help treat foot issues. They verified their findings with a high-tech imaging system and found that a stiffer plantar fascia made the foot's arch more stable, but too much stiffness could cause problems. As the plantar fascia got stiffer, it increased the foot's stability, reduced joint movement, and shifted stress from the toes to the middle of the foot. However, if the fascia got too stiff, the foot's stability actually decreased. This research shows how important it is to find the right balance in foot stiffness for healthy walking.
