How Local Disasters Shift Conservatives' Views on Sustainability

When it comes to climate change, we often hear calls for action. But what about those who aren't typically on board with sustainable living, like conservatives in Western Europe, Israel, and the United States? Well, it turns out that experiencing or expecting natural disasters can change their minds. Research across 24 countries showed that when conservatives face or foresee local disasters, they're more likely to embrace sustainable consumption. It's not about money or trends; they want to help the environment.Unlike liberals, who are already keen on sustainability, conservatives show a significant shift in behavior. However, in Central and Eastern Europe, things are different due to the region's post-communist history. This study suggests that targeted strategies are needed to promote sustainability everywhere. A clever experiment showed that messages about local disasters can push conservatives toward a greener lifestyle.
