How Much Do NJ School Bosses Really Earn?
New Jersey City, USAThu Nov 20 2025
School leaders in New Jersey are making some serious cash. The latest numbers show that while most superintendents saw a small pay bump, a few are raking in over $300, 000 a year.
Norma Fernandez, who runs Jersey City Public Schools, tops the list with a salary of $322, 272. She's been with the district for over four decades and has been the superintendent for the past three years. Before that, she was a principal.
Five other superintendents also made at least $300, 000 last year. Another 17 earned $270, 000 or more. But the average salary for all superintendents in the state was $197, 444, which is only a 1. 95% increase from the previous year.
Most superintendents work full-time in one district, but some districts share a superintendent or have them take on extra roles. This is more common in smaller districts without high schools.
Compared to the national average, New Jersey superintendents are making a lot more. The national average salary for a superintendent is $131, 171.
It's important to note that the salary data is self-reported by the districts. Some superintendents may have changed jobs or left their positions since the data was collected. The data also includes information about whether a superintendent holds multiple roles within the same district or works for more than one district.
