How older adults use the internet affects their social life

Wed Jun 24 2026
Older people who enjoy using digital devices tend to stay more engaged online – and that engagement makes a difference in their social lives. Research shows that how someone feels about technology matters more than just knowing how to use it. People in their late 60s to early 90s were studied, and those who liked technology used it for socializing, finding information, and entertainment more often. Feeling positive about tech was the biggest factor in getting online regularly.
Age played a big role too. Younger seniors tended to use the internet more across all three areas. Men were more likely to use it for information and entertainment, but not necessarily for social reasons. Surprisingly, using the internet just to pass the time didn’t help people make more real-life connections. But using it for social chats actually made people feel less lonely – and searching for information led to more real-world activities. The study suggests that how someone feels about technology affects how much they use it in different ways. Some uses help people feel closer to others, while others don’t make much difference at all.
