How Reddit COVID Groups Formed Fast

The pandemic showed up suddenly and spread across the world in weeks. People turned to the internet to share information and find support. On Reddit, hundreds of new groups appeared almost overnight.

Researchers looked at almost every COVID related subreddit to see what topics came up. They asked three questions: what were people talking about, who were they talking with, and how did the conversations organize themselves.

Location turned out to be the strongest pattern. Even though the virus was global, most groups formed around cities, states, or countries. Geography shaped the biggest share of the discussion spaces.

Political views and skepticism also guided some communities, but they were smaller than the geographic ones. The fast self‑assembly of so many groups shows how online platforms can quickly create structure around a shared crisis.
