How Social Media Users Are Taking Matters Into Their Own Hands

Thu May 01 2025
Social media is a place where people share all kinds of content. Some of this content can be upsetting or trigger bad memories for some users. To help with this, users have started adding trigger warnings to their posts. These warnings let others know that the content might be upsetting. This way, people can choose to skip it if they need to. The big social media platforms use smart tools to add warnings to images and videos. However, they don't do this for text posts. So, it's up to the users themselves to add these warnings. If they don't, some people might see something that upsets them. There hasn't been much study on what kinds of content people find triggering. So, it's hard to know what should have a warning and what shouldn't. To learn more, a study looked at tweets on X, which used to be called Twitter. They used a smart language tool to find out what kinds of warnings people were using and how often. They looked at two groups of tweets. One group had 48, 168 tweets with trigger warnings. The other group had 4, 980, 466 tweets that might be triggering but didn't have warnings. The study found that people are using trigger warnings more often these days. They're also using them for a wider range of topics. This shows that people want to make social media a safer place for everyone. However, the study also found that most tweets that could be upsetting don't have trigger warnings. This means that people might still see something that upsets them without warning. It's important for users to keep adding these warnings. It's also important for the platforms to do more to help. After all, everyone deserves to feel safe online. The study also looked at the feelings behind these warnings. They found that people use warnings for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it's because the content is sad or scary. Other times, it's because it talks about sensitive topics like abuse or violence. Understanding these feelings can help us make social media a better place for everyone. It's clear that users are taking steps to make social media safer. But there's still more work to be done. The platforms need to do their part too. Maybe they could use their smart tools to add warnings to text posts. Or maybe they could make it easier for users to add their own warnings. Either way, it's important to keep working towards a safer online community.
