How Social Status and Travel Time Affect Cancer Patients
Researchers in France dug deep into how social background and travel distance might change survival rates for people with blood cancers. This isn't something that gets studied often, so the findings could help make healthcare fairer for everyone.
The study pulled data from 13 cancer registries across France, focusing on over 19,000 patients diagnosed with six types of blood cancers between 2013 and 2015. These cancers included Hodgkin's lymphoma, myeloid haemopathies, multiple myeloma, chronic lymphatic leukemia, diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and follicular lymphoma. To measure social factors, they used the European Deprivation Index, which looks at things like income and living conditions. For care access, they checked how long it took to drive to the nearest special cancer center for secondary care, and for primary care, they used two tools: the SCALe index and the APL index, which gauge how easy it is to reach doctors based on location.
When they crunched the numbers with advanced math models, some patterns popped out. For patients with myeloid haemopathies, only their social environment seemed to affect their risk of dying. But for those with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, the travel time to the cancer center was a key factor. Interestingly, for follicular lymphoma patients, having better access to primary care—meaning a higher APL score—was linked to lower mortality rates.
This research highlights that your social status and how close you live to medical care can be big deal when it comes to surviving certain blood cancers. It suggests that improving access and supporting people in disadvantaged areas might save more lives.
