How Tech Companies Handle Trade Rules Across Borders

Germany, StuttgartThu Jun 18 2026
A German tech giant recently faced consequences for sending products to Huawei, a Chinese company restricted by U. S. trade rules. Over four years, subsidiaries of Bosch shipped sensors and phone software worth more than $70 million to Huawei without the proper U. S. approvals. When caught, Bosch admitted the shipments were accidental but still agreed to pay $36 million to settle the case. The company also promised to improve its compliance checks to avoid future mistakes.
The U. S. government took a lenient approach because Bosch cooperated fully after discovering the issue. Authorities closed their investigation without pressing charges, partly because Bosch reported the problem themselves. Officials later noted that companies acting early to fix mistakes often receive lighter penalties. Still, the incident highlights how tricky international trade rules can be, especially when products contain American technology. Bosch, one of the world’s largest suppliers, employs over 400, 000 people across nearly 500 locations. While the fine hurt its finances, Bosch’s yearly revenue still tops $90 billion. The case raises questions about whether smaller companies might struggle even more with these complex regulations.
