How to Defend Taiwan's Crabs: The Borax Battle

TaiwanMon Feb 10 2025
Ants are a worldwide disruptor. Longlegged antsare making Taiwan's forests crumble. Scientists feelnewhope, with a new type of weapon against them. The problem? Basically, this ant is going on a killing spree, leaving many native species dead. They are like bullies of the forests and beaches. Taiwan's land crabs are on the defensive. The local species are struggling. The longlegged ants. They're aggressive and relentless. First, scientists tried traditional methods, such as putting down liquid food baits in containers. It was expensive and took too much time. So scientistsgot more creative. They came up with hydrogel baits. These baits are like water bombs with a killer twist. What is less interesting is this: they are similar to the liquid bait but in a watery jelly form. So why is this borax important? Well, after these longlegged ants snatch the bait and bring it to their nest, it kills most of the ants. How fast is it? Let us tell you. In 21 days, it can wipe out over 90% of the workers. It also reduces the babies of the colony. And it can kill even the queens of the colonies. Now, to the question: What about the rest of the ants? Researchers have found that the ants are picky. They love the tiny water jelly balls while they will leave the large ones. So maybe there will be less of an impact on non-target species. That is something to keep in mind. But before you get too excited, the battle isn't over. These water jelly baits can be effective, but that is if they work well in the wild. Scientists need to test these on the big ants colonies to see if they will work on these bigger invasions. These bugs are not something new and they are in a big way in beautiful places like forests and beaches. And there are issues on how it is working out in these areas. As of now, the ants are the ones weaponising and taking the areas for themselves. With further testing, experts will be able to develop a foolproof plan to defend the land crab from the longlegged ant from making the land their own. And with this, they will cause another catastrophe.
