How Well Can Heart Risk Tools Really Predict Health in Middle-Aged Adults?
Mon Jun 08 2026
Middle-aged adults often wonder how likely they are to face heart problems down the road. Two scoring systems—Life's Essential 8 (LE8) and SCORE2—claim to predict that risk. But which one works better? A recent study tested these tools on a group of 30- to 65-year-olds from a general population. Researchers checked how well each score predicted future heart disease over time.
LE8 focuses on eight key factors like diet, exercise, sleep, and blood pressure. SCORE2, on the other hand, zeroes in on cholesterol, blood pressure, and smoking habits. The study found that while both tools help spot risk, LE8 might be slightly more reliable. That’s because it looks at a wider range of daily habits, not just medical numbers.
Still, the difference wasn’t huge. Both scores have limits. They can’t predict heart issues with perfect accuracy because life isn’t that simple. Stress, genetics, and even where someone lives play a role too. So, while these tools are useful, they’re not crystal balls.
