How Well Do Lithuanian Versions of Death Anxiety Scales Hold Up?
LithuaniaMon Jun 09 2025
The Lithuanian versions of two scales that measure death anxiety have been put to the test. These scales are the Revised Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale and the Existential Death Anxiety Scale. The goal was to see if these scales work well in Lithuanian.
The study involved 528 people. Most of them were women, making up 75. 9% of the group. Their ages ranged from 18 to 82, with an average age of 33. 63 years. The scales were checked for their reliability and how well they measure what they claim to measure. This is known as their psychometric properties.
The Revised Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale was found to have four main factors. The Existential Death Anxiety Scale had two. These factors are like different parts that make up the whole scale. The study confirmed that these factors are present in the Lithuanian versions, just like in the original scales.
Both scales showed good internal consistency. This means that the questions within each scale are reliable. They measure what they are supposed to measure in a consistent way. However, the Existential Death Anxiety Scale might need more study in the future. Its factor structure could use some further examination.
Death anxiety is a complex issue. It is not just about being afraid of dying. It also involves existential concerns. These are questions about the meaning of life and death. The two scales used in this study tackle different aspects of death anxiety. The Revised Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale focuses more on the fear of dying. The Existential Death Anxiety Scale looks at the broader existential concerns.
The study shows that the Lithuanian versions of these scales can be useful. They can help researchers study death anxiety in Lithuania. However, it is important to keep in mind that cultural differences can affect how people respond to these scales. Future studies should consider these cultural nuances.
In conclusion, the Lithuanian versions of the Revised Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale and the Existential Death Anxiety Scale are reliable. They can be used for research on death anxiety. But, more work is needed to fully understand their factor structures, especially for the Existential Death Anxiety Scale.
