HP's New Slim Gaming Laptop: Is It Worth the Hype?
Tue Mar 18 2025
HP has rolled out a new contender in the gaming laptop arena with the Omen 16 Slim. This laptop is all about blending portability with decent gaming power. The Omen 16 Slim is designed to be sleek, with its thinnest point measuring just 0. 79 inches. But don't let the slim profile fool you. This machine packs a punch with an Nvidia RTX 5070 GPU. This is a mid-range graphics card, not as powerful as the RTX 5090 found in the beefier Omen Max 16, but still capable of handling modern games.
The Omen 16 Slim is built to be more portable than its bigger siblings. This means it's likely to come with a lower price tag too. Instead of fancy per-key RGB lighting, it opts for a more budget-friendly four-zone RGB keyboard. HP hasn't revealed the final price yet, but it's expected to hit the market in June. The keyboard layout might be a bit tight, especially with the inclusion of a number pad. This could be a deal-breaker for some gamers who prefer more space for their hands.
The display on the Omen 16 Slim is a 16-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1600. It supports a 240Hz refresh rate and a 3ms response time, which is great for fast-paced games. Under the hood, it runs on Intel's latest Arrow Lake CPUs, starting with the Core Ultra 5 225H and going up to the Core Ultra 9 285H. For storage and memory, it starts with 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM. The RTX 5070 is the top GPU option, but it's worth noting that this is the entry-level card in Nvidia's current lineup.
When it comes to size, the Omen 16 Slim isn't the slimmest or lightest laptop out there. The Razer Blade 16, for instance, is both thinner and lighter. However, the Omen 16 Slim doesn't skimp on connectivity. It offers a good range of ports, including USB-C with Power Delivery, USB-A ports, Ethernet, and HDMI 2. 1. It also supports Wi-Fi 6E, which is a plus for online gaming.
So, does the Omen 16 Slim live up to the hype? On paper, it seems to have a solid set of specs. The real test will be how it performs in the real world and, of course, the price. HP is also refreshing other models in the Omen lineup, including the Omen 17, Omen Transcend 14, and HP Victus 15. These models will also get the RTX 5070 option, with the Transcend 14 and Omen 17 offering different CPU choices. The Victus 15, meanwhile, will be the budget option, starting with older GPUs but with the possibility of more up-to-date options.
