Hundreds of Prisoners Return Home in Massive Ukraine-Russia Exchange
UkraineWed May 28 2025
In a significant move, Ukraine and Russia have started a large-scale prisoner exchange. This event is part of a bigger plan to release around 2, 000 people, with each side freeing 1, 000 individuals. The first group of nearly 800 people was set free on Friday, and more releases are expected over the weekend.
The exchange is a direct result of a meeting that took place in Istanbul last week. This meeting was the first direct talk between Kyiv and Moscow since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The prisoner swap was the only major outcome of this meeting. It is important to note that this exchange is not just about soldiers. It includes civilians as well. This is a complex situation because some of these civilians were captured in areas where Ukraine launched surprise attacks.
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the release of 390 people on Friday. This group included both military personnel and civilians. The Ukrainian Coordination Center for Treatment of Prisoners of War provided more details, stating that three women and 387 men were among those released. On the Russian side, the Ministry of Defense reported that 270 Russian servicemen and 120 civilians were returned. However, there is a dispute over the status of these civilians. Zelensky claimed they were "Russian saboteurs and collaborators" arrested by Ukrainian law enforcement. Russia, on the other hand, said they were captured in the Kursk region.
The released prisoners were brought to a meeting point in several buses. Many were given Ukrainian flags and bracelets in Ukrainian colors at the border. Photos and videos showed dozens of men in military fatigues, most with shaved heads, wrapped in flags. Some of the released men were seen speaking to their loved ones over the phone, with many breaking into tears. One video showed people from nearby villages coming out with flags to greet the returnees.
The exchange also highlighted the emotional impact on families. Dozens of people waited for hours in the Chernihiv region to greet the returnees. Many brought Ukrainian flags and photographs of their loved ones, hoping to see them among those being brought back. This exchange is part of a series of prisoner swaps that have been happening regularly. The Ukrainian Coordination Center for Treatment of Prisoners of War mentioned that this was the fifth swap this year and the 64th since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Since March 2022, 4, 757 Ukrainian citizens have been released.
The prisoner exchange is a significant event, but it also raises questions. Why was this the only major outcome of the Istanbul meeting? Ukraine and its allies had demanded an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, but that did not happen. Kyiv also offered direct talks between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, but this did not materialize. The exchange is a step forward, but it is also a reminder of the ongoing conflict and the need for a lasting solution.
