Hungary’s big vote: what’s at stake for Europe and beyond

Hungary’s Sunday vote isn’t just about who runs the country—it’s a test for Europe’s direction. For 16 years, Prime Minister Viktor Orban has shaped Hungary as a place where democracy feels different: less free press, fewer checks on power, and closer ties to Moscow than most EU neighbors. But after years of rising prices, slow paychecks, and whispers of rich allies getting richer, many Hungarians are ready for a change. Polls now show Orban’s party trailing behind a newer group led by Peter Magyar, a former insider who’s promising cleaner government and a break from the past. Brussels watches closely because Orban’s choices have blocked EU decisions on Ukraine and questioned shared European values. If he loses, a 90-billion-euro lifeline for Ukraine could finally move forward, and Hungary might stop being Russia’s favorite inside the EU. Orban calls the vote a fight between “war and peace, ” warning that Magyar would drag Hungary into the Ukraine conflict. Magyar says that’s not true—and that Orban’s real goal is keeping power, not protecting the country.Young voters are key. Many under 30 feel ignored. Orban’s team redrew voting maps to favor their side, and many ethnic Hungarians living outside the country usually vote for him. Undecided voters could swing the result either way. If Magyar’s party wins big, rewriting Orban’s laws won’t be easy.
