Hunt for Health: U. S. States Track Passengers After Cruise Virus Outbreak
Canary Islands, SpainFri May 08 2026
A cruise ship that sailed from Cape Verde to Spain’s Canary Islands was hit by a hantavirus outbreak, leaving 17 Americans still aboard. The vessel, carrying around 150 people, saw two confirmed cases and five suspected ones among its passengers and crew. Three of those infected died, and one remains in critical condition.
The first patient fell ill on April 6 and died a few days later, but the outbreak wasn’t recognized until May 2. By that time, 30 people had already left the ship at St. Helena, including a body. Six U. S. citizens disembarked there on April 24.
Federal health officials notified several states—Arizona, California, Georgia, Texas, and Virginia—about Americans who had been on the ship. Each state said it was monitoring its residents, though none of the former passengers showed symptoms.
Arizona’s health department reported one passenger; Georgia tracked two returning residents, all symptom‑free. Texas mentioned two more who had come back home without illness. Virginia noted a single traveler in good health, with up to five more potentially exposed people being identified soon. California was contacted but declined to reveal numbers.
The difference between the six Americans who left at St. Helena and the larger group monitored by states remains unclear.
While the ship is en route to the Canary Islands, a U. S. representative has urged the federal government to repatriate and support the remaining 17 Americans. She cited a letter from a constituent on board, describing worsening conditions and calling for urgent action.
The representative asked the Secretary of State and CDC director to explain what steps have been taken, how passengers are being contacted, and the plan for medical care and return to the U. S. She emphasized that families deserve answers and citizens should not be left stranded during a deadly outbreak.
Her appeal highlights the need for clear communication, coordinated response, and timely assistance when citizens face health crises abroad.
