ICC Seeks Arrest of Myanmar's Military Leader for Rohingya Abuse
The Hague, NetherlandsWed Nov 27 2024
The International Criminal Court (ICC) wants to arrest Myanmar's military chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. He's accused of horrible things against the Rohingya people, like forcing them to leave their homes and treating them badly. The ICC's boss, Karim Khan, said he'll ask for more arrest warrants soon. He wants to show the Rohingya that they're not forgotten and deserve help.
In 2017, Myanmar's military started a big operation against Rohingya people after an attack by insurgents. Hlaing led this operation, which involved killing, raping, and burning homes. Many Rohingya people ran to Bangladesh to escape. They're still there, facing discrimination in Myanmar because they're not recognized as citizens.
Human rights groups are happy about the ICC's decision. They think it's a big step towards stopping bad things from happening and making sure people are punished for their crimes. Myanmar's opposition government also supports this.
The ICC's judges will now look at the evidence and decide if they should issue a warrant. There's no deadline for this decision. Myanmar isn't part of the ICC, but Bangladesh is. That's why the ICC can look into these crimes.
This request comes at a time when a rebel group took control of a important town in Myanmar, near the Chinese border. The military took power in 2021, leading to more fights with ethnic minority groups wanting more control. In 2022, the UN's highest court also said Myanmar might be responsible for genocide against the Rohingya.
