Ignored at Home: Why Americans Care Less About Ukraine and China
Tennessee, USASat Nov 02 2024
You might think that Americans are deeply concerned about what's happening in Ukraine and China. But the truth is, many people have more pressing issues on their minds. About half of Americans don't want to give more aid to Ukraine, and over half are against spending more on defense. This isn't new. For a long time, many Americans haven't liked the idea of their country getting involved in global issues.
The divide is often between those who are doing well and those who feel left behind. Many politicians, especially those from poor and rural areas, are echoing these sentiments. They come from places where jobs are scarce, and people struggle. In the Rust Belt, for instance, manufacturing jobs have dropped by a third in just ten years. These areas once thrived on industries like manufacturing and mining, but now they're suffering.
Some people might argue that helping Ukraine is good for America. But for many, it's not a priority. They want their local problems solved first. Plus, some feel that the U. S. shouldn't be the world's policeman. They think America should focus on its own issues, like economic struggles and community decay.
It's also important to note that not everyone benefits equally from military aid. Many districts that oppose aid to Ukraine don't have factories that make military supplies. So, they don't see much benefit from the aid. This shows that maybe the U. S. isn't doing enough to connect its military spending with the needs of its people.
In the end, it's clear that many Americans want their government to focus on their local problems. They want solutions that directly help them, not just far-off conflicts.
