Illinois breaks tornado records before summer even starts

Illinois, USAWed Jun 24 2026
This year has been unusually busy for tornadoes in the U. S. , with nearly 800 tornadoes reported nationwide by early June. Illinois, a state not usually seen as a tornado hotspot, has surprised experts by leading with 157 tornadoes so far. That's more than double the number in Mississippi, which comes in second with just 75. Experts say these numbers are especially strange because Illinois typically records around 50 tornadoes a year. By June, it would usually have seen only three months of tornado season. Now, halfway through June, it's already documented record-breaking activity.
Last Sunday marked a peak in this unusual weather pattern. The Storm Prediction Center logged 200 tornado reports in Illinois that single day, smashing the previous record of 139 from 2024. But here's something important to understand: a tornado can be reported multiple times as it moves through different locations. So the real number of distinct tornadoes will be lower than the reports suggest. Experts are still analyzing the data from Sunday and expect the final count to rise over the next few days. Tornado season in the U. S. usually peaks in areas like Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas during spring. That’s traditionally when these states see the most activity. Illinois, on the other hand, tends to be quieter. This year’s surge in tornadoes raises questions about whether the pattern is changing. Weather experts say more research is needed to understand if this increase is a one-off event or part of a larger trend.
