Immigrant Workers Arrested in Fake ID Sweep at South Carolina Factory
Abbeville, South Carolina, USASun Jun 07 2026
South Carolina authorities recently launched a crackdown on fake identity documents, leading to the detention of 48 workers at a local metal casting plant. The investigation, which started in late 2024, uncovered a network of fraudulent documents being used to secure employment. Instead of focusing only on the workers, authorities also targeted those allegedly supplying the fake IDs, including two top managers at Burnstein von Seelen Precision Castings.
The raid wasn’t part of a large-scale federal deportation effort but rather a state-led probe into identity theft and fraud. Officials described the operation as similar to drug investigations, where both users and suppliers face consequences. Six people now face state charges, including the plant’s plant manager and human resources director, who are accused of knowingly hiring workers with fake documents.
The workers, many with prior run-ins with immigration authorities, now face uncertainty about their futures. Some may be deported, while others could have legal options if their cases are reviewed. The American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina raised concerns about due process, questioning whether these detentions were handled fairly.
The factory itself, a long-standing business in a small town of 25, 000, produces metal parts for various industries. Its location near the Georgia border makes it a key employer in the area. But now, its reputation is under scrutiny due to the legal troubles of its leadership.
The investigation began under Biden’s administration but gained momentum after Trump took office, with federal agencies joining the effort. Critics argue that such raids disproportionately affect immigrant families, leaving many without income or legal recourse.
