Inclusive Schools Make Everyone Feel Better
Michigan, USAWed Mar 25 2026
Schools that welcome all kinds of students can help every teen feel happier and more confident. A new study shows that when high schools promote respect for LGBTQ teens, even those who are not part of the group feel more connected to their classmates and society.
The researchers asked 287 straight, cisgender students from 38 Michigan schools how open they were to interacting with LGBTQ peers. Over time, the teens reported a small rise in openness, likely because they learned more about different identities and their challenges. This growing acceptance also linked to better social well‑being for the cisgender students.
A related study by the same lead researcher followed 367 teens—both straight and LGBTQ—for 18 months. The research tracked anxiety levels every few months. Although LGBTQ teens started with higher anxiety, those who had strong self‑esteem saw the biggest drops in worry as they moved through high school.
These findings suggest that a supportive, inclusive atmosphere benefits everyone, not just LGBTQ youth. Boosting self‑respect and encouraging acceptance can reduce stress for all students.
Educators and parents might use this evidence to create more affirming classrooms, helping every teen thrive.
