Ever since a deadly clash in 2020, India and China have been locked in a tense standoff along the Himalayan border. But recently, both countries have taken a step back, literally. They've agreed on a deal that aims to reduce military presence in the disputed region, known as the Line of Actual Control. This agreement comes after weeks of talks, with India's Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, hailing it as a move towards disengagement.
The deal is significant, especially as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to attend the BRICS summit in Russia. The summit will also be attended by Chinese President Xi Jinping, and there's speculation that Modi might use this opportunity to discuss the border situation with Xi. However, the agreement doesn't guarantee the withdrawal of the thousands of troops still stationed in the Ladakh region. Beijing hasn't publicly responded to the agreement yet.
Back in July 2020, a military conflict between the two neighbors resulted in the deaths of Indian and Chinese soldiers. Since then, both countries have beefed up their military presence along the border. Although there's been a partial withdrawal from certain areas like Pangong Tso lake, Gogra, and Galwan Valley, tensions remain high. Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar sees this agreement as a result of patient diplomacy, hoping it will lead to peace and tranquility along the border, essential for improving relations between the two countries.
