Indoor Sports Facility in Kingston: A Game-Changer for the City's East End?

Wed Sep 11 2024
For years, Kingston residents have been clamoring for a solution to the city's lack of all-season sports facilities. Now, the City is seeking public input on a proposal that would see the transfer of a parcel of land to a developer planning to build an indoor sports facility. The proposed development would see a 7,000 square-metre indoor sports facility built on a three-acre parcel of land at 755 Innovation Drive, part of the St. Lawrence Business Park. This would provide a permanent space for public use, unlike the previous indoor sportsplex in Westbrook that closed its doors. The City is expected to report on the proposed development to Council in November 2024. Can an indoor sports facility truly address the city's sports needs? Should the parkland be sacrificed for the sake of development? What other options could the City consider to meet the demands of its residents?

questions

What is the City hiding about the proposed development, and why is there a lack of transparency in the process?
Is the City truly seeking public input, or is this just a formality to appease residents?
How will the City ensure that the facility is well-maintained and operated in the long-term?
